News on ICE Warehouses

Apr 27: In a NY Times article, a senior official is reported to have said that DHS Secretary Mullin has expressed skepticism about purchasing more warehouses.

Apr 28: The Guardian reported that Mullin’s call for quieter immigration enforcement is alarming the MAGA base. The new policy which favors ICE not leading in the evening news stories, has groups like the Mass Deportation Coalition (led by the Heritage Foundation) wondering if Trump is betraying his campaign promise of mass deportation.

Apr 28: The record 75-day government shutdown ended when the House approved a Senate-passed bill funding much of DHS. Trump signed the bill the same day funding FEMA, TSA, the Coast Guard, and the Secret Service through the end of September. The budget resolution directs committees in Congress to draft legislation and authorize $70B for ICE and BP for the next three years. Under the reconciliation process, if nearly all Republicans vote for this, Democrats won’t be able to stop it.

Apr 29: Walsenburg, Colorado activists have begun gathering signatures for a ballot initiative to block the reactivation of a former prison by CoreCivic for ICE. An incident at a local Safeway has resulted in charges against a perpetrator accosting a signature gatherer.

Apr 30: Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) sent a letter to DHS Sec Mullin reiterating his opposition to the two warehouses in Pennsylvania.

May 1: Salt Lake City activists continue their Wednesday and Saturday protests at the ICE warehouse. In addition, activists are planning to send postcards to Utah’s Governor Spencer Cox. The postcards will reference the shameful historical past of the Japanese internment camps and will carry the message, “Greetings from Utah, home of Topaz internment camp 1942—and the new ICE detention center 2026. Wish you were here!”
